Typical C-Mount machine vision lenses have a minimum operating distance of 100 – 200 mm. Lenses of this type can work fine for large field-of-view imaging applications, but they fall short when used for macro imaging.

 

Standard C-mount lenses can be modified for use in small field of view applications, by adding spacers between the camera and the lens, but doing so greatly degrades the light sensitivity, sharpness and distortion characteristics of the lens. Standard machine vision lenses are simply not designed for macro imaging applications.
